Tshiuetin Rail Transportation — owned by the Innu and Naskapi communities it serves — runs the passenger train from Sept-Îles, on Québec's Côte-Nord, north through Emeril Junction in Labrador to Schefferville. The company owns the 132.5 miles from Emeril to Schefferville outright; south of Emeril the train runs over QNS&L track. It is an essential service — Schefferville has no road out — and also a genuine traveller's route: canoe campers ride it every summer to reach the northern rivers, and the operator's own travellers call the landscapes worth the detour on their own.
From the window
North from the St. Lawrence shore the line climbs into the Côte-Nord wilderness — the Moisie River country, endless boreal forest, lakes and Shield rock — ending at Schefferville on the Labrador border, at the edge of the subarctic. Few Canadian trains run through country this empty.
On board
Coach service on a working lifeline train: residents, supplies, hunters and paddlers. The operator publishes its terms plainly — all sales are final, one change of travel date is permitted, and a ticket stays valid for a year.
Before you book
- Book by phone with Tshiuetin — Sept-Îles 418 962-5530 (toll-free 1 866 962-0988); Schefferville 418 585-2333. There is no online booking.
- The operator publishes no timetable: the schedule can change, with notice by memo and on its Facebook page. Confirm your exact days before building a trip around them.
- For Labrador City: the train serves Emeril Junction only. From there you arrange your own onward transport — about a 45-minute drive.
- All sales are final (one date change allowed; tickets valid one year from purchase).
- Labrador City is not the railhead: the train serves Emeril Junction only, and onward transportation from Emeril Junction to Labrador City — a 45-minute drive — is yours to arrange in advance.
- Carry photo ID for boarding: every passenger must show an ID card with picture to the security agent before boarding. Tickets are final sale with one free date change, and a ticket stays valid for a year from the original purchase.
- Pack heavy, within the stated limits: check up to four pieces of baggage at no more than 23 kg (50 lb) each, plus one carry-on. Dogs, cats and small rodents travel for a fee in an appropriate-size carrier (not provided) in the baggage railcars, and even a canoe or kayak can be checked as non-regular baggage.
Gateways
Sept-Îles, on the Côte-Nord, is the southern gateway — reachable by road along the St. Lawrence and by air. Schefferville at the far end is train-in or fly-in only: there is no road.
