Best Train Rides

Atlantic Canada by Train

No excursion railways in the Maritimes — a handful of small genuine rides, and one of the great overnight trains.

Railway tracks crossing a long steel truss bridge over blue water

Let's be straight about Atlantic Canada: New Brunswick and Nova Scotia have no operating full-size excursion or heritage railways. The region's railway museums — and there are good ones, in Hillsborough, Orangedale and elsewhere — are places you visit rather than ride, so they have their own section on this site (Heritage sites, below). Older lists and Wikipedia still show the New Brunswick Railway Museum as a working heritage railway; it has not run trains in years, and it does not appear in this ride directory.

What the region does have is 5 small, genuine rides — a working farm train near Aulac, New Brunswick, a museum speeder ride at Elmira, Prince Edward Island, a small museum train ride at Avondale, Newfoundland, a trackless road train in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and a ride-on miniature railway at Windsor, Nova Scotia — and all are listed below, labelled for exactly what they are.

The region's real train story: The Ocean

Atlantic Canada's great train experience is a scheduled one — VIA Rail's The Ocean, running between Montréal and Halifax since 1904, through Moncton and the Maritimes overnight. For most Atlantic Canadians, it is the train.

Across the border. The nearest excursion trains to New Brunswick are in Maine, whose narrow-gauge museums and excursion lines are a story for this site's future US section. For now, if you're crossing the border anyway, Maine is where Atlantic Canada's missing heritage railways effectively live.

Gateway towns. Elmira sits at PEI's eastern tip — pair it with the Points East coastal drive. Avondale is on Newfoundland's Avalon Peninsula, an easy trip from St. John's. The Ocean calls at Moncton and Halifax.
