The Yukon's railway story is one legendary line: the White Pass & Yukon Route, built in 1898–1900 to the Klondike goldfields and still climbing out of Skagway, Alaska, over the pass and down to Carcross. It is counted here because Carcross is its Canadian terminus and the Yukon end is half the experience — but note the trains depart from Alaska, and the through journey needs a passport.
In Whitehorse, the waterfront trolley — a single 1925 Lisbon tram — was retired in 2019 and relaunched in 2024 on a shortened route. A small ride with a big heart. (For the record: the Northwest Territories and Nunavut have no passenger railways at all.)

Gateway towns. Most riders reach the White Pass line via Skagway — a cruise port — and pair Carcross with a Yukon road trip; Whitehorse, about an hour from Carcross, is the natural base.
