Best Train Rides

Saskatchewan by Train

The surprise province: four real operations in grain-elevator country, including two themed excursion trains most lists have never heard of.

Saskatchewan is the happy surprise of this directory. Older lists missed the Wheatland Express entirely — a full excursion railway running heists and murder mysteries between Wakaw and Cudworth — and the Southern Prairie Railway has been quietly running themed trains out of Ogema's restored 1912 station for years.

Steam lives here too: the Western Development Museum's 1914 Vulcan is Saskatchewan's only operating steam locomotive, and Saskatoon's railway museum pairs its short ride with a climb-aboard prairie collection.

Saskatchewan Railway Museum

Museum railway — short rideOperating

Saskatoon, SK

SeasonMay long weekend to Sep long weekend (Fri–Sun + long-weekend Mondays, usually 10 am–5 pm)

Set expectations right and this is a charmer: admission includes a short motorcar ride to the far end of the yard, then a walk back through a climb-aboard collection of prairie railway stock. A hands-on museum, not an excursion line.
